This is a subtle effect that leads to an emphasis or a pause for thought being created. See Emily Dickinson's poem "There is No Frigate Like a Book" on page 575 of Structure, Sound, and Sense. No one who lived in it was out of sound of the big saws in the mill by the lake. Pin the layer firmly down in the slit, below the surface of the earth. These are all valid resources for learning about history, but one of the most interesting ways is to critically read a piece of literature from a period in order to learn about the people of that time's culture and values.
